Introducing Lucy Mullican (@lucymullican), who will be working in 99 Canal’s STUDIO 1 to complete a large scale series of watercolors on China Birch, which will be shown next spring in Europe.
The panel paintings which are dimensionally her height and arm span emerge viscerally, influenced by themes from the natural world as well as from her own body. Exterior environments blend with bodily forms creating anthropomorphic landscapes. She uses natural and synthetic mineral pigments mixed to achieve a particular color palette creating translucent surfaces that reveal her representation of spirit.
As part of her process, Mullican will wear a plain white dress while working in the studio that will be slowly transformed by what she is painting on a given day. The dress which she will take off at the end of each day, acts as a visual testament to the time physically spent in this space which is also an aspect of her work.
Lucy Mullican (b. 1994) lives and works in New York. She received her BFA from the Glasgow School of Art in 2019. In March 2022 she had her first solo exhibition, Sensed as Well as Seen, in New York City at Olympia Gallery, followed by her first European show, Fragments, at Villa Magdalena, San Sebastián, Spain in September 2022. In February 2023, Villa Magdalena also produced her second solo exhibition, Veils, at Galeria Moscota in Mexico City. Mullican’s work, Illusive Places, was featured in a group show at PACE gallery in Seoul, South Korea in May 2024. Other group shows include Glasgow, Edinburgh, London and New York.
For the past three years she has performed alongside artist Joan Jonas in Out Takes. What The Storm Washed In. The work has been performed at the Park Avenue Armory in New York City, The Haus der Kunst in Münich, Artist Space New York City and most recently at MoMA.

Studio Program | 99 Canal
The Studio Program is a one to three-month opportunity for emerging and mid-career artists based both within and outside New York City.
Collaborating with artists, galleries, and institutions, our selection process draws on the insights of the local creative community to ensure a continuously diverse and vibrant studio cohort.
The program initially launched in 2022 as a response to the lack of affordable spaces in Manhattan and provides access to an intimate and context-specific environment to work in.
