studio program_Agnieszka Kurant
October 2022 - January 2023
Introducing Agnieszka Kurant (@agnieszka.kurant), who will be working in 99 Canal’s STUDIO 1 to produce works for her solo show at Kunstverein Hannover (opening in January 2023). During the residency she will also be completing her monograph book “Collective Intelligence” to be published by Sternberg Press/MIT Press in the winter of 2022.
Kurant is a conceptual interdisciplinary artist whose practice investigates collective intelligence, nonhuman intelligences (from microbes to Artificial Intelligence), the future of labour and creativity, and the exploitations within surveillance capitalism. She explores how complex social, economic and ecological systems can operate in ways that confuse distinctions between fiction and reality or nature and culture.
Recipient of the 2020 LACMA Art and Technology Award, the 2019 Frontier Art Prize, the 2022 Google AMI Grant Award and the 2018 Pollock-Krasner Grant Award. Her recent commission for the MIT List Visual Arts Center in Cambridge, MA - The End of Signature, adorns the façades of two new MIT buildings. Her solo show Crowd Crystal, curated by Carolyn Christov-Bakargiev, is on view at Castello di Rivoli in Turin until November 27. Kurant's work was recently featured in exhibitions including the Munch Triennale, Munch Museum, Oslo, The Beauty of Early Life, ZKM, Karlsruhe, Broken Nature at the MoMA New York, Cybernetics of the Poor at Kunsthalle Wien, Shifting the Silence at SFMOMA, Uncanny Valley at the De Young Museum, San Francisco, the Istanbul Biennial, The Age of Extreme Self at MOCA Toronto and the Milano Triennale.

Studio Program | 99 Canal
The Studio Program is a one to three-month opportunity for emerging and mid-career artists based both within and outside New York City.
Collaborating with artists, galleries, and institutions, our selection process draws on the insights of the local creative community to ensure a continuously diverse and vibrant studio cohort.
The program initially launched in 2022 as a response to the lack of affordable spaces in Manhattan and provides access to an intimate and context-specific environment to work in.
