Introducing Tianyi Sun (@tianyisun_) and Fiel Guhit, who will be working in 99 Canal’s STUDIO 1 to conceptualize, create, and practice the performance chapter of an ongoing project of interlocking parts that will be presented at Artists Space on the 1st of April, 2023.
Though Sun and Guhit maintain distinct points of departure, their practices converge in exploring the affects of technology—the subjective experiences, feelings and emotions that emerge through such encounters. Through their collaborations, Sun and Guhit interweave sculpture, sound, performance, and machine learning to produce immersive and interactive works that explore contemporary networked systems and the hegemonic structures embedded within generative technologies.
The chapter: VISIBLE_DEVICES projects the audience into a total information environment in which machine learning algorithms are given physicality through visual and sonic representations. As such, the performance attempts to trace the black box of technology—rendering the invisible. But despite its visibility, it remains an incomprehensible experience. VISIBLE_DEVICES tests the limits of our capacity to generate possible futures in the shadow of monolithic archives and the relentless extrapolations of ‘generative’ algorithms.
Tianyi Sun (b. 1996) is a multidisciplinary artist that explores the structural functioning of digital interfaces, archival systems, and imaging technologies through the creation of responsive environments that confront the body’s relationships with systems that both oppress and console.
Fiel Guhit (b. 1986) is an artist and engineer that creates experiential software objects to simulate and invert the ways in which innovation has distanced the human experience—a break away from normalized patterns to reveal margins of “error” as margins of possibility.

Studio Program | 99 Canal
The Studio Program is a one to three-month opportunity for emerging and mid-career artists based both within and outside New York City.
Collaborating with artists, galleries, and institutions, our selection process draws on the insights of the local creative community to ensure a continuously diverse and vibrant studio cohort.
The program initially launched in 2022 as a response to the lack of affordable spaces in Manhattan and provides access to an intimate and context-specific environment to work in.
