studio program _ Rosa Joly
February- March 2025
In the winter of 2025 Rosa Joly used Studio 5 to develop a new series of plaster and aluminum foil sculptures that were shown that same year at the Pernod Ricard Foundation (@fondationpernodricard) in Paris. This body of works combines casts made in the public space of wrought iron fences as well as 3 reproductions of 99 Canal’s staircase railing. A work from this series is currently being exhibited at the Kunstverein Grafschaft Bentheim (@kunstverein_grafschaftbentheim), as part of a group show visible until May 10th.
Rosa Joly’s research based practice is rooted in her experience as a sculptor and as a filmmaker. Recent films on 16mm are l’Hotel Night (2024), an homage to Chantal Akerman and Babette Mangolte shot at the former Hotel Monterey, and On one’s last tooth (2023), a tribute to the Bay Area artist Jay DeFeo.
Together with Sebastian Wiegand (@s_wiegand) she is the co-founder of Scheusal (@scheusal_official), an artist-run space in Berlin.
Studio Program | 99Canal
Our Studio Program facilitates four private, professional studios (350–800 sq ft), offered to artists of all disciplines through three-month residencies. We’ve found that individuals developing personal projects in New York, engaging with our neighborhood, and proposing initiatives for our public programs tend to gain the most from the residency. During their time at 99CANAL, artists are invited to take part in community-driven activities such as our ‘in conversation’ series, recurring lunches, and open studios.
