July-August 2025
We are pleased to introduce Dozie Kanu, 99 Canal’s latest artist-in-residence, currently working in Studio 3 in preparation for his upcoming exhibition Self Governance, opening this September at the Moholy-Nagy Foundation.
Born in Houston and based in Santarém, Portugal, Kanu’s practice engages sculpture as a way to question form, function, material, and purpose, often informed by his own life experiences. Through a distinct visual language, he challenges Western art history by foregrounding its diasporic roots, while quietly addressing themes of home and identity.
Recently featured in the chair by the window is an old friend at Anonymous Gallery (NYC), his most recent major commission, A Library as Large as the World (2025, in collaboration with Federico Campagna), was presented at the LUMA Foundation in Arles this past May.
Kanu’s work resists easy classification, existing simultaneously as communicative and performative objects.
Studio Program | 99 Canal
The Studio Program is a one to three-month opportunity for emerging and mid-career artists based both within and outside New York City.
Collaborating with artists, galleries, and institutions, our selection process draws on the insights of the local creative community to ensure a continuously diverse and vibrant studio cohort.
The program initially launched in 2022 as a response to the lack of affordable spaces in Manhattan and provides access to an intimate and context-specific environment to work in.
